Walking along Sovietskaya Street in Nikolaev

NikolaevIf you come to Nikolaev for the first time, I recommend you to visit Sovietskaya Street – the favorite place to rest for Nikolaev citizens. At the beginning of Sovietskaya Street you will find McDonald’s and 24-hour supermarket “Sotka”. Near McDonald’s there is a monument dedicated to 200-year anniversary of the city. Across the street from the monument there is “Continent” hotel (one of the most popular among foreigners).

While walking along Sovietskaya Street, you will see many shops, restaurants, entertainment centers and night clubs. In the middle of Sovietskaya Street, on the crossing with Bolshaya Morskaya there is Kashtanoviy Square. In the centre of the Square there is a monument to St. Nicholas – patron saint of the city. Very often city holidays take place here. On Christmas you will find the biggest fir-tree of the city here. When you walk along Sovietskaya Street towards Admiral Makarov Boulevard, you will get to the Lenin Square. On it there are monuments to V.I. Lenin, to “68 paratroopers”, Eternal Flames, and St. Nicholas Chapel. Here is also the building of the city government.

Nearby, on Admiralskaya Street you will find Russian Drama Theatre and the Catholic Church. On Admiral Makarov Boulevard there are many monuments (to the great admirals Faleev and Makarov; the cannon and others). In the summer it is pleasant to have rest under the trees on cozy benches, in small cafes and restaurants.

If you go down the stairs, you will get to the Embankment of the Ingul River. Across the Embankment there is the Yacht Club; Pak Pobedy and the city district “Solyaniye”. Also you will see the docks and cranes of the 61 Communards Shipbuilding Plant.

The bridge that connects the centre of the city with Solyaniye District lies to the left. In Solyaniye there is a beach “Strelka” (it is called like this because this long and narrow spit resembles an arrow by shape). Nowadays Strelka is the favorite beach of Nikolaev citizens in the summer.

Everyone who visited Nikolaev at least once will surely remember Sovietskaya Street. Very often foreign tourists have limited knowledge about Nikolaev. They only answer the question: “Where have you been?” – “I have been on Sovietskaya Street”.

Nikolaev apartments for daily rent and hotels on or near Sovietskaya Street are twice as expensive as similar apartments in a different district of Nikolaev city. So, think yourself…

P.S. If you want to have a tasty meal on Sovietskaya Street, visit restaurant “Kazbek”…
